Is Louisiana Worth Visiting? Here’s What No One Tells You

Short answer? Yes – but it’s complicated. Louisiana offers some of the most unique culture in the U.S., but it’s not without serious flaws. Here’s the breakdown:

Food – 10/10

Louisiana’s cuisine is unmatched. New Orleans alone is one of the best food cities on the planet. Cajun and Creole dishes dominate — gumbo, jambalaya, oysters, crawfish, beignets, Po’ Boys, boudin, etouffee, BBQ shrimp, muffuletta — the list is endless and deeply regional. Flavor-packed and fiery, it’s impossible to leave hungry.

Po’ Boy

Locals – 8/10

Southern hospitality shines here. Whether it’s a stranger offering you food at an LSU tailgate or striking up a grocery store chat, locals are warm and proud of their heritage. That said, bluntness and socioeconomic divides can affect how welcoming some communities feel.

Zulu Mardi Gras Parade

Activities – 7/10

New Orleans carries the state in terms of things to do. Hit the French Quarter, Garden District, WWII Museum, or take a swamp tour. Don’t skip Mardi Gras — it’s America’s most outrageous festival. Outside the city: visit Whitney Plantation, Avery Island (home of Tabasco), or catch a Saints or LSU football game.

Transportation – 4.5/10

Outside New Orleans, a car is a must. Even in the city, public transit is sparse and roads are rough. Infrastructure is dated, and bike-friendliness is limited. Still, Louisiana’s swampy highways and boat routes offer scenic (if bumpy) travel.

Infrastructure & Cleanliness – 3/10

This is where Louisiana struggles. Roads are crumbling. Flooding is frequent. Drainage is weak. Trash is common. Power outages after storms are normal, and boil water notices aren’t rare. It feels like a state constantly in recovery mode.

History & Culture – 9.5/10

Culturally, Louisiana is unmatched in the U.S. French, Spanish, African, and Caribbean roots run deep. It’s the birthplace of jazz, voodoo culture, Creole and Cajun heritage, and some of the country’s most haunting plantation history. Every street corner has a story.

St. Louis Cathedral

Cost – 4/10

It’s affordable. Great meals for $10–15. Gas is cheap. Festivals are often free. Mid-range travelers can comfortably budget $75–120/day. It’s one of the best value destinations in the country.

Safety – 2/10

Louisiana has the highest murder rate in the U.S. and is a top 5 state for violent crime. Carjackings and property crimes are common, especially in New Orleans. Add natural disasters, flooding, and fragile infrastructure, and you’ll want to stay alert.

Nightlife – 9/10

New Orleans has some of the wildest nightlife in the world. 24/7 bars, open container laws, live jazz, street performers, and no real rules. Bourbon Street is legendary. Frenchmen Street is the local favorite. In Baton Rouge, LSU’s bar district thrives with youthful chaos.

Outdoors – 4/10

No mountains here, but swamps and wetlands steal the show. Kayak, fish, or spot gators in Jean Lafitte National Park. Lake Pontchartrain is a peaceful escape. It’s a unique ecosystem, even if limited in diversity.

Overall – 6.1/10

Final Verdict: Louisiana is 100% worth visiting — but know what you’re getting.

Go for: Food, music, culture, and chaos.
Watch out for: Safety, infrastructure, and swampy weather.
